6 Tips for What to Wear at Your Photo Session

One of the most frequent questions I receive from my clients before their session is “what should we wear?” It’s a perfectly natural question; our clothing is a big part of our identity and you want to look your best! Let’s quickly talk over a few tips for what to wear at your photo session.

1) Your clothing is a part of your story.

Whether it’s an engagement session, a family lifestyle session, or even your wedding, I am all about capturing your story. Your clothing is a big part of that, so embrace who you are and where we are going to have your session. Are you more into the city and night life? Consider a blazer or more formal dress. Are you two outdoorsy? Wear your favorite hiking clothes and boots. Is this a family session? Consider wearing what you would relax in around the house! Don’t be afraid to show your true selves!

2) Be comfortable.

Most likely, you aren’t a professional model (if you are, welcome). That might mean that having photos taken of yourself is not a common occurrence. It’s already weird enough just being in front of the camera, so choose clothing that you know you won’t have to worry about. You want to feel completely at easy and free to be yourself and your comfort is a big part of that. Maybe it’s that sweater or pair of pants that fit you perfectly, or give you the feeling of your favorite season. Whatever it is, find those clothes that you know you look good in and you know you’ll love!

3) Don’t try a brand new style.

This next one closely follows up the last tip of comfort. Part of your comfort is not getting too crazy and trying something brand new. Avoid new hair styles, brand new and potentially uncomfortable shoes, or something that you wouldn’t wear for any reason. Don’t worry about trying to match what other people want you to be or any cultural norms you think you need to conform to. Embrace who you are now.

4) Coordinate, don’t match.

This isn’t the 90’s, I don’t recommend matching jean jumpers and it’s almost never a good idea to match completely, even if you are on a beach (please no more matching white beach sessions). Instead, look to compliment each other. Choose colors, tones and patterns that work well together and share the personality of everyone involved.

5) Don’t overthink it.

It’s easy to do and I get it. I’ve been there for my own family session considering every option available to us, when in fact we needed to step back and go with what works. If you find yourself staring at the closet for far too long, remember what makes you feel your best. Don’t be afraid confide in one or two trusted friends (ones who will be honest with you) to help you make your decision.

6) Bring options.

Sometimes you arrive at your session location and immediately feel something different. It’s completely OK, simply bring a option that allows you to easily change your look. That could be a scarf, a cardigan, a sweater, or a change of shirt or pants. Don’t bring your whole closet, but bringing one or two different options can help you make a decision at the last moment or change things up halfway through your session.

I hope these tips help you answer that all important question of what to wear! If you have any questions or thoughts, leave a comment below!
