3 Reasons to Have Second Photographer at Your Wedding

top three reasons to have a second photographer at your wedding

When I first started photographing weddings in 2012 I was doing it all myself. Trying to be in every place, every angle, getting every shot possible. I quickly learned that there are huge benefits to myself and my couples to have a second photographer at a wedding.

Now let me be clear, as I’ve grown in my skill I have learned how to capture a wedding on my own, and it is by no means impossible. I’ve done it many times and I’ve been able to capture many incredible images on my own and get well rounded coverage of weddings. However I do believe there are significant advantages to having more than one photographer, so let’s dive into my top three reasons why I think you should consider a second photographer for your wedding day.

Extra coverage

This isn’t rocket science, you will benefit from a second photographer because I simply can’t be in two places at once. When you and your fiance are getting ready, you’ll want someone to be in both places capturing those moments. The same is true later in the day after your ceremony. Being able to having one photographer cover the cocktail hour while you still get your family photos and any last couples portraits helps round out the story of the day and makes sure that you get a wide view of the guests who attended your wedding.

Two Angles

Extra coverage isn’t just about having two people in two separate places, having a second photographer is wonderful for capturing two angles of the same moment! During your first look we love being able to easily capture the reactions of both partners in a creative manner. We love during your ceremony to not just photograph you at the altar tearing up over your vows, but to capture images of your guests tearing up as well! There are countless times throughout your wedding day when having two angles tells your story in a much more comprehensive manner.

Backup

It isn’t the most fun option to consider, but having two photographers means you’re that much more backed up and covered in the case of a catastrophic event. Maybe your lead photographer get’s horribly sick the night before or their car breaks down on the way to your wedding. Not only will we do everything in our power to have another photographer step into their position if something like that happened, but having a second means that you’ve already got someone else on the way.

One last thought. You never have to worry about what you’re getting with my second photographers. I am extremely careful to vet my seconds, making sure they are experienced, awesome to work with, and photograph in a similar style to my own. You’re not getting one lead photographer and one second who just started out. You’re getting two pros.

Having a second photographer is something that nearly 75% of my couples choose to include in their packages, however it doesn’t always make sense for every need. If you’re not sure, just reach out and I’ll help you determine what’s best for your wedding adventure.
