A Bride and Groom stand arm in arm in front of Lincoln's Cottage, Washington DC.

It isn’t often that the place I am photographing a wedding is both beautiful and holds deep historical significance. As I drove onto the grounds of Lincoln’s Cottage in Washington DC, I was excited to explore this venue, the very place where the Emancipation Proclamation was drafted!

Joanna and Kyle shared that this was the perfect venue for them. “Not only do we live and work in the neighborhood, but we wanted to get married at someplace uniquely DC that also held special cultural or historical significance. As soon as we learned that the cottage did weddings, we we knew that that is where we would get married.”

We started out the day together capturing their first look, which is always a special time for couples. Kyle and Joanna were no exception, Kyle even offered to wipe the tears off of Joanna’s glasses. From there we took to exploring the inside of the cottage, where Kyle and Joanna played a competitive game of Checkers!

The ceremony on the lawn behind the cottage was the perfect spot in the middle of fall. Cider kept us warm inside while orange sunset light radiated over our shoulders onto the site where Kyle and Joanna joined their lives together. Immediately after the ceremony we took just a few minutes to capture rich autumn portraits in that crisp golden light! Be sure to check out the shots below of the two young ring bearers, who brought the rings to the ceremony in style with Star Wars Snow Speeders!

It was a blessing to be able to capture this wedding especially in such a memorable place in our history. Enjoy their photo story below!
