Best Weddings at Sweeney Barn, Manassas Virginia
When you first think of a barn wedding, what do you think of? Rustic, maybe simple, country? While there is nothing wrong with any of those, Sweeney Barn breaks the mold on what a barn wedding typically looks like, making it a popular wedding venue in Northern Virginia.
The Setting
Sweeney Barn is located in Manassas, Virginia, directly off of route 234 just a few miles from interstate 66. I consistently hear my couples say that they chose Sweeney Barn partially because it was so easy to get to, being close to Dulles International Airport and very accessible via major highways.
Beginning as a dairy barn in 1939, Sweeney Barn has been transformed into a rustic, cozy, yet modern venue with dark interior wood and elegant chandeliers. It is a versatile space fit not just for weddings, but events, music, and more.
When driving in, couples may feel that the nearby industrial park and office buildings cause visual distraction and will negatively impact the look of their photography. But don't let this dissuade you. Any experienced photographer will have no trouble keeping these buildings out of your images, making it feel as though Sweeney is in a world of it's own!
Ceremony Spaces
Sweeney has both indoor and outdoor options for wedding ceremonies. Inside, you can choose from the top floor with it's high ceiling and elegant chandeliers, or the bottom floor with it's bright, white, more cozy interior.
Unless weather does not allow for it, my preference at Sweeney is for ceremonies to be held outside. It's a lovely, backlit site where the Barn symmetrically frames your ceremony and provides protection from harsh sunlight in the summer.
Cocktails are usually hosted indoors (upstairs or downstairs), with receptions being inside the spacious, high ceiling top floor. It is versatile and allows for 200 seated guests and large dance parties. I've even seen a live band transform the room into a high energy concert space!
The Photos
Having documented many weddings at Sweeney, I can confidently say there are a huge number of areas for creative images. One of the most popular photo spaces at Sweeney is the silo with it's spiral staircase and unique perspectives. Indoors or out, there are plenty of spaces for in-the-moment couples portraits as well as large group photos.
I love using their outdoor spaces throughout the year, whether it's the lush spring blossoms, rows of evergreen trees, or the stunning fall colors that last into late into autumn.
The Cons
My first con is not really a con (sorry for the clickbait), but Sweeney requires all couples to have a planner. While some might see this as a con, it's actually a huge benefit to you that I encourage all couples to consider whether getting married at Sweeney or not! Having a planner releases you and your family members from the stress of having to push forward your day. They are your advocate, making sure your vision goes forward and allowing you to be fully present, enjoying your time with friends and family to the fullest.
The only true con at Sweeney is the single small upstairs bridal suite. It's a natural limitation of an old barn that there are not a lot of extra spaces. This upstairs room is confined, but is very pretty and does have a larger than normal attached bathroom. Bridal parties of four or less will have no issues, but larger parties will feel the lack of space. Most brides and bridesmaids have their hair and makeup done at a nearby home or hotel, saving only the dresses to be put on at Sweeney. There is no secondary room for the other half of the bridal party, so most grooms or groomsmen arrive fully ready.
The Verdict
There are many more details on the Sweeney Barn website, so I encourage you to go there with additional questions. Overall I'm a huge fan of Sweeney Barn. Their friendly and experienced team has made the weddings I've documented there seamless and fun!
P.S. As a bonus, located just down the road from Sweeney you'll find 2 Silos at Farm Brew Live, a popular brewery, restaurant, and music campus. Many couples also hold their rehearsal dinner there at the delicious Black Sheep Restaurant.
