 Washington National Cathedral Engagement Session

A few Christmas seasons ago my wife and I attended a performance of Handel’s Messiah at the Washington National Cathedral. Both of us are music geeks who sang parts of the Messiah in college, so we were extremely excited to go to a performance of the Messiah at the National Cathedral. No surprise, it was fantastic! But being there got me excited not just for the music, but for the possibility of photos around such an inspiring building in DC!

Enter David and Abigail, and their cat Clinton! David and Abigail came to me asking about wedding and engagement photography and you can guess my excitement when they said they wanted to have their engagement at the National Cathedral. I was pumped!

David and Abigail are two amazing people who love history and architecture and live very close to the Cathedral, passing by it every day. For them made sense to have their session in such a beautiful local place in the fall. From the architecture to the gardens, to the fall colors, we had everything we needed and more to have an incredible engagement session together.

We started out at their house to include their adorable fluffy white cat Clinton and to get a few lifestyle shots in their home. From there we walked together to the Cathedral and simply explored around grounds, looking for interesting light, composition; anything that interested us. We found spots with gems of color and brilliant late-afternoon sunlight. We also made sure to get a few shots in front of the nearby coffee shop, Open City at the National Cathedral, a favorite of theirs in the area.

After their session we enjoyed some delicious Mexican food at Cactus Cantina. If you haven’t been there, you have to try this place! It was the perfect way to end the night, getting to know David and Abigail and getting further excited for their wedding to come. Enjoy their photo story below!
