I remember feeling like we had entered another world. The world just past us was the city, the bustle, and the hustle of DC and Alexandria. But at River Farm that all drained away.
Joey and Caroline are an easygoing, outdoor-loving couple who wanted their wedding day at River Farm to feel flowing and natural. People were the most important part. They settled in quickly, allowing the hugs, the laughter, and the connection with their guests to drive the experience, while I got excited about filling each image with story.
We took some time, walking around River Farm, enjoying the view of the Potomac River, the crunch of fallen leaves and the smell of the autumn air. Technically that was the time for portraits, and I did encourage some guided moments.
But much of this time was simply exploration. Enjoying the moment is far more important than telling you what to do. It gives you a real experience, leading to images filled with a depth you will remember, not something you were told to do. I gave small ideas here and there, but left plenty of room for them to be with each other in a way that felt relaxed and normal.
Throughout the day there were beautiful opportunities to see their love for family and friends on display. A tender moment holding mom’s hand. Her ladies and their authentic reaction to seeing her in her dress for the first time. Thank you Joey and Caroline, for giving me access, knowing that you could fully be yourselves and trust that the meaning of it all would be seen and preserved with care.
